Written & photos by : Insyirah, Secondary 3

Awal Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic new year. It is a significant day for Muslims around the world. This event commemorates the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is solar, the Islamic calendar is based on the phases of the moon, resulting in a year that is approximately 11 days shorter. Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, during which warfare is traditionally prohibited. This month holds particular significance for various Islamic traditions.

The way Awal Muharram is observed can vary greatly across different cultures and sects within Islam. Here are some common practices:

  1. Fasting

  2. Prayer and Reflection

  3. Charity

It underscores the timeless relevance of Islamic teachings in guiding personal and communal life, fostering a sense of unity and purpose as the new year begins.
