What is Korban?
Korban is a word which has a similar spelling to our holy book “Quran”, but indicates a rather sacred meaning of an act of a loyal and true believer of Allah s.w.t. Korban is an Arabic word which means sacrifice. In Islam, Korban signifies Prophet Ibrahim (alaihissalam) true conviction of sacrificing his son, Prophet Ismail (alaihissalam) to Allah s.w.t. Miraculously and with Allah’s will, when Prophet Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismail, Allah spared his life and replaced him with a ram. That stupendous moment made Muslims around the world commemorate and remember Prophet Ibrahim’s (alaihissalam) trials, by slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, goat, cow or camel during Eid-ul Adha. Meat from the sacrificial animal during Korban will be given away to others as a symbol of our willingness to give up some of our own bounties, in order to help those who are in need. The act of sacrificing animals for Allah’s sake on the other hand also symbolizes our willingness to give up things that are of benefit to us or close to our hearts, in order to follow Allah’s commands.

Let us ponder upon the verses from the Quran on Korban so that we can attain piety of the heart (Taqwa) and be grateful with Allah’s endless blessings upon us.

And for every [religious] community We have appointed a rite [of sacrifice]1 that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, [O Muḥammad], give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]

— QS. Al-Hajj 22:34

Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and [to] the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.

— QS. Al-Hajj 22:35

And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols [i.e., rites] of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy [who does not seek aid] and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.

— QS. Al-Hajj 22:36

Ibadah Korban FAQs

a) 1/3 untuk fakir & miskin
b) 1/3 keluarga dan kenalan
c) 1/3 sendiri
